By the 1920s, though, the knocker upper profession had largely died out, as alarm clocks became more commonplace and affordable. "Personal alarm clocks became widely used in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries," says Yaqoot. "Their spread closely followed the rise of industrialisation and the adoption of artificial light.
